Molly P asked:
I have been looking into painting my kitchen counter tops. I have found many DIY internet sites but none of them ever state that it is safe to eat from. The final step is a polyurethane finish and I am curious if this is safe. I plan to use cutting boards for food prep anyway, but just want to be aware of the concerns if there are any.

Over 10 years ago I used Polyuretine, when I mableized the kitchen counterr tops: and they are still being used. I put on several layers and went with the manufactures suggestins. We however never cut foods on them. WE use a washable cutting board. I also done our concrete kitchn floor in this and had great results. I mop,and use murphy and bleach to clean with. (light solution) Like 1-quart of water to 1-tsp, or more bleach when I clean the counter tops. We have always been careful to not allow food to lay on the surface and wipe off after every spill.
Is it food safe?
With what should you paint it?
I am not sure why someone is suggesting top coating with polyurethane. What will it be adding to a good quality paint?
Once it has fully cured, it will be foodsafe.
