My wife & I have made a number of improvements to our home in 2006. New roof, new deck, new windows & doors. Are we able to deduct the costs from our 2006 tax return?

You can’t deduct those costs from your tax return. Instead, those amount are added to the total cost of your home (also known as basis).
However, if any of those items are energy star rated, you might qualify for the energy credit on your tax return. Go to for further information about what items qualify for the credit.
No, you cannot deduct home improvements that you made, unless you took a home equity line of credit to do so, and then you can deduct only the interest on the loan. These are considered upgrades to your property (home improvement) and may help you when you sell.
You might qualify if there is a home office/business located in home. Permanent improvements may qualify. See article from link below for details.
You might be able to take a residential energy credit for part of the cost of the windows and doors ir they’re outside doors. The deck, and the rest of the cost of the windows and doors, would be added to your basis and cut your capital gains tax, if any is due, when you sell.
