Do you read whilst in the bathroom?

Mdme. Mango Keeps it Real asked:

Do you read the Community Guidelines before you even think about posting a question or answer?

Maybe the world would be a better place if everyone read the guidelines whilst taking a poo.

Helping a friend with home Improvements?

andre asked:

A good friend just brought a small racnher and doesn’t want to do home improvements for himself. He wants to pay me to do several projects including: painting the tile in a small bathroom, painting an average-sized bedroom, and painting the cabinets in a small galley-style kitchen. I suggested that he pay me $50.00 per project. The house cost around $80,000. My friend has around $7,000 for home repairs, and his hourly income is around $13.00. (He isn’t a rich man.) Is $50.00 a reasonable price for labor considering my friend buys the nessecary supplies? If not, what price per project should I request of my friend? I am a college student, and this money would be very helpful to me because I could do the work on the weekend in addition to my parttime job.

Common DIY and Home Improvement Worries

Many people who have home improvement questions ask friends or family or even neighbors but what do you do when they are not around? You can’t very well ask someone who is not there. So who do you turn to in your time of need?

Well, when you have a question there are lot of different options when a real person isn’t around. First, you can read up about home improvement in a book or magazine, secondly you can flick through a catalogue and hope they have answers to your questions or you can jump on your computer and go to the good old reliable internet. There is a world waiting at your fingertips and no doubt that the internet has all the answers to your questions.

Books, magazines and catalogues are only updated and published weekly or monthly, so you can be sitting there with this week’s edition of the “home improvement” magazine and it doesn’t have the answer to your questions and it is another week or month until the next one comes out. But that option of course is not good to you, you have half started a job and can’t remember how to finish it, you obviously can’t just leave it incomplete for weeks on end!

The best option is the internet. It’s full of information on anything and everything so you are absolutely sure to find an answer to any question you have! Home improvement questions are asked by thousands of people each day and they always log off the internet leaving very happy and of course knowing the answer to their question. The internet has vast amounts of information on any topic or subjects in the world so a question based on home improvement is sure enough to find at least one hundred answers.

Home improvement questions are asked by everyone, not everyone knows the answers to everything. Sneaking onto the internet seeking answers is those men who think they can do the job then get half way into it and realize that he doesn’t know how to do the job and is scared to ask the wife what to do.

So when a family member isn’t around or your neighbors have popped out for the day, just log on and access millions of pieces of information all at the click of a button. The information is fast, free but not often very reliable; but well at least you are getting your question answered.

Here are a few tips on how you can give your kitchen a new lease of life without spending too much:

1. Paint – This must be the easiest and cheapest way to change the look of any room in your home and your kitchen is no exception. If you are fairly inexperienced at DIY like myself I would stick to just painting the walls, if like my kitchen you have limited wall space then changing the colour of the ceiling from that very popular white can make a dramatic difference.

However if you are more of a handy person around the house or have a little bit of money to pay a professional, you could go that extra step and have your cabinet fonts refinished in a different colour. Cabinets in colours can be very exciting in the kitchen: in postal blue, light pastels, whisper grey and sunny yellow can all create surprising results. Decorating magazines often show cabinets in spruce green, Navy blue and weathered or faux finishes.

One of the latest trends is to combine painting and staining in different areas of the same kitchen cabinets, or stain in two different colours. You are only limited by your imagination! If you are not sure which colour to select, your paint professional may offer colour consultations, or you may want to get advice from an interior designer.

2. Cabinet Refacing – To go another step from refinishing your cabinets, you could have them refaced. This will obviously cost more but is still less than a new kitchen.

3. Door knobs and Handles – Even if you aren’t changing the look of your cabinets you can still make a little difference by updating the styles of handles to a more contemporary look.

4. Worktops – This is another item that can make a huge difference but if you aren’t that handy at DIY can cost a lot to get a professional. Also the type of material will also make a huge difference to the cost, from natural stones like granite to tile and concrete.

5. Curtains – Apart from open-plan living room and kitchens it is very rare to find a kitchen without a window, kitchen curtains can be very affordable and easy to fit, even for us DIY novices. Curtains can be a good place to start when deciding on colour schemes from the walls to cabinets and accessories.

6. Accessories – There a wide variety of kitchen accessories you can use to make a nice kitchen into a great kitchen with pictures, plants, contrasting towels, rugs even a bowl of fruit. If you glass panelled display cupboards, place decorative coloured objects to present a desired effect.

7. Dining Accessories – If you have a dining table in you kitchen or an open-plan dining room / kitchen, make use of accessories available such as table cloths and place mats. Dining chair covers are relatively in-expensive compared to buying new and can transform this area in a matter of minutes.

9. Flooring – One area that people tend to miss the most is floor and can be very easy to change depending on what you already have in place. You don’t have stick with the lino anymore, there are many other choices from Glass,

Ceramic Rubber & Cork Tiles to Palmwood & Bamboo.

You don’t even need to follow all these ideas, just a few can achive that effect you are after.

Home Diy Projects Bathroom Planning

Careful planning is the key to a successful bathroom-remodeling project. Before you begin any work in the bathroom, create a budget, a floor plan, a list of supplies, a timetable, and important legal considerations. Let’s break it down by subject.

First, create a budget. Determine how much money you can comfortably spend, and save about 20 percent for emergencies. Get estimates for the work that needs professionals, and always include electrical, plumbing, heating and cooling, and drywall installation costs in your budget.

Second, design a floor plan. Ask yourself, will you be working with the existing space or will you be adding on or knocking down walls? Check to make sure you will not disturb the electrical wiring, plumbing, or zoning regulations. Next, measure the amount of space you have and draw a floor plan. In drawing the plan, first put in all the items that are fixed. For example, if the toilet must be in one place because of plumbing, it is a fixed item. Experiment with how you like your floor plan, using different arrangements, with different types of cabinetry, shelves, or even walls. You might try pocket doors to save space, and corner sinks, floating sinks, or pedestal sinks to save even more space. L-shaped vanities and alcoves also save space. In addition, corner showers conserve space, and clear glass in showers creates the illusion of even more space. You may want to add windows or mirrors to let in light.

Third, make a list of the supplies you’ll need and make sure they are available when you need them. Some typical supplies include sinks, flooring, wall tile, countertops, lighting, medicine cabinets, showers, bath tubs, cabinets and cabinet handles, toilets, extra storage, faucets, toilet paper holders, paint or wallpaper, chairs, accessories (like storage containers and/or artwork), as well as tools you have or can buy.

Fourth, create a timetable. Talk to experts or people at home improvement stores to plan how much time you’ll need. If you’re hiring contractors, work with them to design a timetable you all can follow.

Plan projects according to the time you have available. Put in a new toilet and sink one weekend, for example, and paint another. You don’t have to do it all at once, so plan sensibly. Don’t paint the walls or install woodwork until the hardware is taken care of — you don’t want to damage work you’ve already done. Above all, be flexible and allow time for the unexpected or even emergencies to happen.

Fifth, keep in mind legal considerations. Get and post a building permit, pay any necessary fees, make sure you, your contractor, and any workers have insurance coverage, and keep children and animals away from the construction area.

By following these checklists, your bathroom remodeling plans will be a snap
